Parenteral pharmaceutical products, defined as all innovative and generic products delivered by injection, have several advantages over most other dosage forms:
· Delivery of the drug is fast: 15–30 seconds for intravenous and 3-5 minutes for intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
· The injection route is suitable for drugs not absorbed by the digestive system or those that are too irritating to the digestive system.
· Although many injectable products offer immediate availability, other injectable products can be formulated to last days or even months.
· Large volume parenteral products (LVPs) can deliver continuous medication, such as morphine for patients in pain, or dextrose in water for patients needing fluid and carbohydrates.
· Biotechnology-based large molecule drug products are typically delivered via the parenteral route.
