Pluri Inc.’s subsidiary, Pluri Biotech, has been granted a patent by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). Specifically, the patent is for Pluri Biotech’s proprietary 3D immune cell expansion and activation technology.

China Patent Expands IP Portfolio

With the approval, Pluri expands its intellectual property (IP) portfolio, joining patents in the U.S., Japan, Korea, Australia, and Israel. Pluri subsequently said growing its portfolio supports its strategy of global collaboration on immune cell therapy products.

Such products, the company said, are designed to be built on its large-scale, automated manufacturing platform.

Pluri said China is becoming “one of the world’s most dynamic markets” for chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapies. CAR-T is just one of the cell types Pluri’s patent family covers. Among the others are both conventional and unconventional T cells, natural killer cells, and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes.

Demand is growing for large-scale production of these diverse cell types—whether genetically modified or unmodified—in numerous therapeutic areas. Regarding how Pluri’s 3D platform enhances this production, it features a unique bioreactor system mimicking the human lymph node environment.

By these means, the platform enables mass production with capabilities to expand billions of immune cells.

Pluri says the system is cost-efficient and supports rigorous quality control. The company’s president and CEO, Yaky Yanay, drove that point home in a statement.

“Patent protection in China, one of the most dynamic cell therapy markets globally, validates the novelty and scalability,” Yanay said. “Our goal is to offer partners a globally protected manufacturing platform capable of supporting large-scale immune cell production.”

As the parent company of Pluri Biotech, Pluri Inc. deals in the areas of regenerative medicine, foodtech, agtech, and aesthetics.

It also offers CDMO services in addition to its growing IP portfolio.
