Sartorius Stedim Biotech has acquired MKS Instruments AB (Umetrics) based in Malmö, Sweden, for $72.5 million. Umetrics specializes in data analytics software for modeling and optimizing biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing processes. The companies have been working together for approximately five years and, in 2017, plans to generate annual sales of around $15 million and a double-digit operating profit.

In addition, Sartorius has completed the acquisition of U.S.-based Essen BioScience Inc., expanding the Sartorius Lab Products & Services Division with Essen’s real-time live-cell imaging and analysis systems. The company also expanded its portfolio in bioanalytics last year with the acquisition of IntelliCyt, a cell screening specialist. Essen BioScience is headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI, and expects to generate annual sales of around $60 million and a strong double-digit operating profit margin.
