West Pharmaceutical Services shared its packaging and drug-delivery solutions for the bio/pharmaceutical industry at CPhI. According to Mike Schaefers, vice president, global product management and marketing operations at West, sophisticated biologic drug products for the treatment of chronic diseases are becoming more prevalent, and there is a demand for integrated containment and delivery systems designed to accommodate these highly sensitive molecules.

West showcased several drug-delivery system and packaging component technologies including its 1–3mL NovaPure plungers for higher-volume prefilled delivery systems, designed using quality-by-design (QbD) principles to reduce particulate and ensure consistency of delivery.

The SmartDose technology platform, which is used in Amgen’s single, monthly 420 mg dose delivery option for Repatha (evolocumab), and recently approved by FDA, was also highlighted. This is the first combination product that incorporates SmartDose technology for use in the U.S.

Another product featured was Daikyo Crystal Zenith vials and 1-mL long insert needle syringes, containment systems manufactured from a cyclic olefin polymer that offer a break-resistant, high-performance alternative to glass for complex drugs.

In addition, Daikyo RUV components, which are ready-to-use, validated components manufactured using clean, high-quality elastomer formulations and then washed, camera-inspected, and sterilized to help minimize risks around component preparation and eliminate bioburden, were also on display.
