Spray Drying is the term used to succinctly describe a robust and scalable drying process in which liquids are first sprayed (atomized) to create droplets that are captured in a heated air or gas stream. These small droplets evaporate/dry very quickly to yield small, dry particles of powder that are carried in the drying stream before being harvested, usually using a collection device known as a cyclone.

In a typical pharmaceutical process a bulk feed solution is first prepared and will typically contain an active ingredient and one or more excipients in solution together. The feed solution is then pumped to the atomization nozzle which generates a fine, continuous spray of feed solution into the drying chamber.
