As expected, in 2023 sales for pharmaceutical companies making COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, including big names like Pfizer, took a nosedive. After the pandemic’s peak, the demand for vaccines dropped significantly—Pfizer’s revenue plummeted a staggering more than 40% to $58.5 billion after reaching a record breaking $100 billion the year before. Despite the tough year coming back to reality, Pfizer still managed to claim the top spot in the year’s report, which is based on pharmaceutical-only product sales. Making the way for new-comers Viatris and CSL, Pfizer’s partner, BioNTech, fell off this year’s report as did Moderna due to declines in COVID-19 vaccine sales.
