The process of attaching polyethylene glycol polymer chains to a molecule. This is intended to help a drug or therapeutic protein elude a host’s immune system (reducing immunogenicity and antigenicity), and increase the hydrodynamic size (size in solution) of the agent, prolonging its circulatory time by reducing renal clearance. PEGylation can also provide water solubility to hydrophobic drugs and proteins.
