Dalton Pharma Services has added flow chemistry reactor technology to the services offered to its clients. This new technology is now part of Dalton's arsenal of capabilities in the area of custom synthesis and process development. Benefits including increased scalability, flexibility and process control.
In flow chemistry, according to the company, two or more reagents are continuously pumped into a small flow reactor, where they mix and then react under thermal control. Mixing is completed in a matter of seconds instead of the much longer timeframes characteristic of conventional reactors. The reaction temperature can be raised above the boiling point of the solvent very quickly, resulting in faster reactions. The high surface area to volume ratio in a small flow reactor allows for nearly instantaneous control over reaction temperatures, giving potentially cleaner products and increased reaction safety in all custom synthesis and process development projects. Scale-up issues are minimized through the more consistent control of mixing and heat transfer throughout the reaction at any scale, even up to a ton. Flow chemistry also allows a faster change over between the different custom synthesis projects.
"Adding flow chemistry technology keeps us on the leading edge of the chemistry business, and builds on three decades of experience and innovation in custom chemical synthesis,” said Peter Pekos, chief executive officer and president, Dalton Pharma Services. “Our clients need more efficient and scalable approaches to custom synthesis which enable safe cost management and environmental responsibility. By being able to seamlessly transfer the chemical process to our cGMP API manufacturing suites, clients can accelerate their drug development programs.
The company said it has initiated work with small-scale reactions up to several hundred grams and will continue to expand the scale of its flow chemistry capabilities in API process development and custom synthesis.
